Case study: book publishing service, Legal pluralism and child protection in Nigeria

2 years and 10 months ago in Case Study

Peerwith connects authors and experts across the world, aiding collaboration and improving the quality of academic work. We have selected a small Team of book editors that offer their services in language editing and book restructuring, needed to turn your thesis into a book. We aim to become a leading open access thesis book publisher, in partnership with Aldus Press and selected book editors.

So lets take a look at a case study!

The book publishing service requested

Our client, having completed a PhD thesis on the legal issues surrounding child protection in Nigeria, wanted to ensure that his research into the legal context affecting child protection in Nigeria was of the highest possible standard before publishing to a wider academic audience. His request came through the Peerwith book publishing service.

The selected book editor

For this book project, the client selected Carol Stephenson as the book editor. Carol is an expert with an editorial background in legal publishing spanning twenty years in Thomson Reuters, meant that client and expert were perfectly matched to enhance this thesis on legal pluralism for wider publication as a book. The Expert’s subject areas include digital publishing, humanities, linguistics, academic and legal editing, and ESL services.

The service delivered

Carol explains: “Working with clients is something I find very rewarding, especially since this is a true collaboration”. So, what did that collaboration process involve in this case? “Every editor has their own method of working of course but for me the editorial process falls into three distinct phases.

The starting point, as always, was to read the work entirely, then read it again. This of course takes time, but it’s essential in identifying the main points of the dissertation and the overall focus of the book”.

Phase one – working through a couple of chapters at a time which the client reviewed at each completion of the three-phase process, I earmarked sections such as the research; methodology; results etc. (relevant to theses), which were shortened with readability in mind, paraphrasing and incorporating content into the structure of the book. This improved the flow of the author’s narrative without losing the intended meaning but providing a better fit in terms of the overall structure. If a section needed elaboration, then the author had the opportunity to do that or to discuss any of my suggested developments.

Phase two – the language itself. English may not be a first language for many authors, so this is a part of the process where I feel I really help the client to express themselves. Language that may seem too flowery or literary for the reader is exchanged for succinct phrasing that gets the point across.

Phase three – consistency is an important attribute of quality. Attaining consistency in a large work can be difficult when client focus can tend to be on the nuts and bolts of the thesis itself. So, I added value in the form of agreeing the standardising of terms, checking citations, endnotes, headings all conformed to a specific style.

Conclusion

You have completed your thesis, produced original research, and made an important contribution to your field. Now you want to turn your dissertation into a book. And why wouldn’t you after all those years of hard work? Turning a dissertation into an academic book means you will be taking a completely different approach to getting your message out there. Not all researchers are potential book authors. That is why you may need help. Hire a book editor through Peerwith.

This case study illustrates that the book publishing service has enabled the author to extend the reach of his work, raising public awareness of the complex issues surrounding child trafficking and child protection in Nigeria with the help of Peerwith. The advantage of reaching a much wider audience with the certainty of quality work which has been thoroughly edited for maximum impact, through consistency of style, language and meaning is the “value add” that the Peerwith book publishing service provides for clients.
