Peerwith connects you with international, academic experts in researcher services who can improve the quality of your academic work, speed up the publication process for your articles, and increase your chances of publishing in high-impact journals.
Full-service is our solution for clients who don’t have the time or simply don’t wish to negotiate and engage to find the right expert. Peerwith full-service means we will engage with experts on your behalf and guarantee that you will receive a high service level. This is also very helpful when a request is actually a series of service requests with different experts involved.
So let’s break it down into 4 easy steps with this case study:
The service requested
Claudio is a researcher from Colombia with a paper that he feels is ready to get published in a 1 to 2 impact factor journal. He contacts the publication manager of his university, because he has one problem: the paper is in Spanish, but the university requires publication in an English journal to help improve international ranking. So, Claudio needs a series of services with a clear go / no-go in the middle.
His publication manager suggests using Peerwith full-service. So he contacts a local Spanish account manager for Peerwith who helps him with the following:
Step 1: Translation
The first step is to get the paper translated from Spanish into an English version. Fortunately for Claudio, Spanish into English is a supported language in the “Machine Translation before Manuscript review” service offered on Peerwith. The result is a basic Spanish manuscript, not ready for publication, but good enough for an expert to read without having read the original Spanish version.
The Peerwith account manager processes the machine translation with a turnaround time of 1 hour; Step 1 is done.
Step 2: Manuscript review and journal guidance
Experts on Peerwith offer “Manuscript review” services, which is essentially different from “after submission peer review”. The Manuscript review service on Peerwith is pre-submission and the experts who offer this focus on what is needed in-order for your manuscript to get published. With the result from step 1, the basic English manuscript, the Peerwith Team posts the following request on behalf of Claudio:
- Advice if this paper is quality enough to get published
- Suggest any Scopus-indexed journals that are a good fit with impact factor between 1 and 2.
- Tell what is needed to get this published, like e.g. language editing.
Clearly the requirement here is to gain reputation with a publication in an “indexed” journal, which is what we see a lot at Peerwith. We are basically asking an expert to judge the chance of this manuscript getting published.
Review and journal guidance expert profile
Gary Bentley responds to the request:
For the quote below, I will provide the following:
1) provide recommendations about the publish-ability of the manuscript;
2) provide recommendations about the editing requirements needed before the manuscript is sent out for review;
3) provide a list of two to three journals appropriate for your manuscript.
It is important to note that I am not making any guarantees about the likelihood that your manuscript would be accepted at all or any of these journals. Regards Gary
See how Gary mentions in the last paragraph that there is no guarantee for publication at this time. He does seem willing to help Claudio with a review for US$70. Because Gary’s profile is the best fit for the subject, we accept the quote and connect. See Gary’s Peerwith.Expert page: http://peerwith.expert/garybentley
Result of the review
Four days after the connection is made, Gary delivers the work in the form of a review report. The report starts with this:
I finished reading the oceanography paper and I recommend publication (see the uploaded review). While the English will need a lot of work to make it readable to a native speaker, the science is thorough, well-executed and useful to the field of coastal oceanography.
I compared the original Spanish version to the English machine translation and the text is remarkably good. There were a few problems and anomalies but I was able to figure out what they were supposed to be since I have a reading knowledge of Spanish. Peerwith can do the language editing of the paper if you wish to submit it on the platform.
I suggested five major journals that publish research similar to the ones in this paper, but I am not an oceanographer and can’t recommend one journal over the others. You’ll have to look at the type of research each journal publishes and decide where the paper would best fit.
Gary continues his report with recommendations for the author to work on (figures, footnotes, references) as well as a recommendation to post a new request on Peerwith and ask for English Language Editing services. He concludes with a list of five recommended journal titles that he believes are a good fit with the content of the manuscript, and should be willing to accept the paper for publication if it is fully prepared.
Step 3: Go / No-Go
The Peerwith Team posts another request, asking for English Language Editing services and 4 Experts respond with quotes. In combination with the review report, this is sent back to Claudio and his publication manager for a clear go / no-go decision.
Note that now costs are still just $70 but there is now a concrete sight on total costs.
The decision is made to proceed with preparation and submitting it to the journal.
Step 4: Manuscript preparation
At this point the Peerwith account manager helps to connect Claudio to an expert for further manuscript preparation and the work starts.
Manuscript preparation expert profile
Jim Bowden is a professional copy-editing and publishing expert. With the English manuscript available, the review report from Gary and the choice of journals, Jim now has all he needs to prepare the manuscript for submission. He collaborates with Claudio directly through the platform. Once he is done, the original Spanish paper is now an English manuscript ready for publication.
Claudio gives him a 5* rating for his work and comments:
Really great work with Jim, very positive and helping person. Good and sound knowledge in Language editing. All the comments are very good to tune the manuscript in better way.

Conclusion
A basic request might eventually turn out into a series of service requests with different experts and stakeholders involved. In full-service mode, a Peerwith Team member got involved to manage the project and made sure it was executed efficiently both in timelines and costs.
Publication support usually requires such a series of requests and it is crucial to have multiple experts involved for review and further preparation. Also, a go / no-go decision is essential to have in the process, preferably before spending a lot of resources on preparation and submitting a manuscript to a journal that is not likely to accept it. It also reduces the number of iterations for revision and/or attempt to submit before it is accepted.
