A key challenge faced by institutions in Columbia, and Latin America in general, is how to increase the number of articles their researchers publish in international, indexed, peer-review journals. In this case study we look at how the Universidad del Norte, also known as Uninorte, took on this challenge in collaboration with Peerwith.
The Universidad del Norte, in Barranquilla, is a private university ranked one of the top 5 universities in Columbia. Marcela, Head of Publications, is responsible for helping researchers at the university submit articles which will be accepted for publication in international, high-quality journals. To increase their chances of success Marcela turned to Peerwith.
Our very first collaboration
Our very first collaboration was a translation service request – from Spanish to English. Marcela connected with Tony Ferrar, a Peerwith Expert and a native English-speaker with over 12 years’ experience in scientific research. Tony was the perfect expert to take on this task having started his career as a researcher at CRG (Centre for Genomic Regulation), in Barcelona, Spain where he spent many years as the only English-speaker in a Spanish lab editing manuscripts for colleagues. He also had a track record of having his own research published in many high-impact journals, such as; Nature Methods, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Systems Biology. Tony completed the request for Marcela and was given our top rating – 5 stars – with the following comment:
Excelente experiencia, muy rápido y trabajo de buena calidad.
English translation: Excellent experience, very speedy and great quality work.
Tony is one of our most active experts on Peerwith and with more than 5 years’ experience as a scientific editor has built up a large client base. He is an excellent fit for any translation project from Spanish to English covering subject areas he has an understanding of. Tony commented,
The best request I received was for a Spanish to English translation of an applied geography article. It was a great opportunity for me to review an article from a completely different field than my own, and most importantly, without the Peerwith platform I never would have connected with this Colombian client.
Improving the payment process
The success of this first collaboration led to Marcela posting many subsequent requests. The online, pre-payment process was however slightly cumbersome and was causing delays in the process. To tackle this issue, we offered the Universidad del Norte our Institutional Payment Solution. This meant as a verified supplier for the Universidad del Norte, Peerwith could now submit monthly invoices covering all service requests made by the institution on the Peerwith platform. This speeded up the process considerably.
Setting up a special institutional landing page
With a solid relationship in place and the number of requests increasing our next step was to set up a special, Institutional Landing page for the Universidad del Norte. We also agreed a pre-payment plan with Marcela, allowing the university to manage their budget (part of the Institutional Solutions package). Researchers at the Universidad del Norte could now sign up for Peerwith through their special landing page. They could then negotiate and select their preferred expert and the cost would be taken off the university’s pre-paid budget.
Adopting the Cockpit application
The final part of our Universidad del Norte story concerns the adoption of the Cockpit application. Just recently launched, the Universidad del Norte was an early adopter of the application which gives administrators, such as Marcela, power over their publication budgets and planning. It is a key feature and management console for our Institutional Solutions package, supercharging any pre-publication workflow by providing a helicopter view of all Peerwith products within a private market place, such as the one for the Universidad del Norte.
The success of a single translation request has grown into a strong and mutually-beneficial partnership which includes a private marketplace and adoption of an Institutional Solutions package including the Cockpit application. As well as helping the Universidad del Norte reach their goal of increasing the number of articles their researchers publish in international, indexed, peer-review journals, Peerwith has provided the university with a transparent, efficient and cost-effective pre-publication workflow.
