Attempting to use the ideas, words, or work of another person, without giving them due credit, is considered extremely unethical and is termed plagiarism. Plagiarism, including self-plagiarism, are one of the first things a journal editorial team will check for once you submit a paper. These checks are automated, resulting in plagiarism problems which are in fact not plagiarism (“false-positive”). This is another potential risk for authors to see their manuscripts rejected for reasons that can be avoided. Plagiarism problems are usually caused by incorrect paraphrasing, but there is a thin line between paraphrasing and plagiarism. Therefore paraphrasing and/or self-paraphrasing is a thing to consider while writing your manuscript and if you need Expert help, peerwith.com is your best friend.
Earlier Peerwith Expert Glenna shared her thoughts on this subject, today Expert Essam from Egypt shares his thoughts:
Rephrasing and paraphrasing are interchangeably used to denote re-rendering copied parts from cited references in a style different from that of the original author to avoid plagiarism. Manuscripts which fail to render effective paraphrasing show a high similarity index via software programs (e.g., iTHENTICATE and Turnitin). Therefore, a manuscript with a similarity index greater than 5 – 10% should be rejected without peer-reviewing. Dissertations which demonstrate 10 – 20% similarity to online/offline resources are discarded. Regulations and ethics would mandate retracting a published manuscript if plagiarism was detected.
Given that scientific content and academic contribution matter the most, English writing skills should not be an obstacle against scholars from outer circles of native speakers. Authors are encouraged to assign the same paraphraser to give their publication history a narrative signature. Paraphrasing should be differentiated from language editing because the former include esthetic and functional improvement. However, language editing is kept at the critical minimal level necessary to correct errors, mistakes and inconsistency. Accordingly, Paraphrasing is a plus service offered for authors who would like to submit prestigious articles. It is time to engage with a greater readership.
