December is already my third month at Peerwith. Time really does fly when you are having fun! After working at a big publishing company for 10 years, it is very different to work at an entrepreneurial one-year-old platform. It’s a very different environment: I used to spend my time traveling all over the world and managing 30 people, now I spend my time on product development and managing myself, but I love it.
Peerwith’s proposition is very much in line with my own beliefs: there is a lot that can be done better in the author services market. The marketplace model aims to do exactly that. Science collaboration is a hot topic and it is a fact that collaboration between scientists and research groups improves the quality of the research done. That is why at Peerwith we want to ensure that this happens in author services. As an author your research is precious to you and making sure that you can communicate your research findings in the best possible way is vital. Collaborating with an expert in your field who can help to improve the language, but also can challenge your conclusions, or help you to identify areas that need more research or discussion, can be beneficial to ensure the end result has higher impact. Directly communicating with this expert is vital in this case. If you have submitted a service request you will have noticed that experts have different skills and backgrounds, and their quotes are in line with their experience and level of seniority.
As an expert, you want to offer your services when you are confident that you can help to improve the work. That is why on the Peerwith platform you can decide when to send a proposal, including your chosen quote to a client, and only do this when the service request meets your professional requirements. I’m sure that it can be disappointing when a client prefers to work with a different expert, but personally I like this element of the marketplace. It is about finding exactly the right expert with the appropriate quote, and this is what the Peerwith customers can expect. On the other hand, experts receive a fair remuneration, they too can decide to do the work only when the fee meets their expectations.
Looking at the feedback we receive from our customers and seeing the high ratings our experts and clients get, truly pleases me. We are doing something good by helping researchers and their work. Knowing that the direct communication between clients and experts is appreciated by both sides shows that Peerwith adds value. The only thing we need to do now is to spread the word and ensure more academics get to know Peerwith and enjoy the services. Naturally, the Peerwith team aims to continuously improve the platform and its functionalities and I want to thank all the people who have taken time to give us feedback, suggestions for improvement and ideas for new developments. Logically there is a limit in time and budget, but we are working on some great stuff (also see Ivo’s piece on the blog and check out the expert pages) and we already have a long list of ideas. Our aim is to make Peerwith the superior platform for author services, so please do keep your suggestions coming, which will help us to prioritize developments based on your needs.
My ambition for Peerwith is to do a lot more for the scientific community. I hope we can be the platform where researchers, medical practitioners and many others will not only connect for author services, but for collaboration in general. Bringing scientists together to get and give support in services like language editing, translations and data interpretation is great but not the limit. Don’t let the service categories fool you: any request you have in relation to your academic work can be submitted on Peerwith!
Being an online platform means that the Peerwith team won’t take a long Christmas break (and our experts are telling us they won’t either) but when work is satisfying and exciting that doesn’t matter at all. Naturally we will free up time to spend with family and friends, which is important as well. I wish all of you a wonderful festive season and hope to see you back online on Peerwith.
