Peer-to-peer editing works! Evidence from 1,250 public ratings

3 weeks and 22 hours ago in Case Study

Peerwith is unique, because we connect experts in a secure peer-to-peer researcher services environment. We foster collaboration to improve the quality of scientific output. Peerwith’s customers, the authors, have expressed their gratitude to the editors, the Experts, in both one-to-one conversations and public ratings.

Based on the analysis of 1,250 ratings, we conclude: it works!

So we analyzed the most recent 1,250 ratings from authors towards Expert editors, usually also their peers. This is what we see: authors appreciated the final work (28%) for its excellent quality (19%) and professional communication (12%). The overall feelings our customers expressed pertained to the appreciation of the provided service (18%), gratefulness for the helpful comments and suggestions (4%), and swiftness in returning manuscripts (15%).

Although several customers thanked editors for more than a single feature, this analysis measured the first element each client rated. Sixty percent of the raters used intensifying adverbs to show how grateful they are. One-fifth of the assessors recommended the editors they dealt with to new customers.

For these 1,250 ratings, the average exceeds 4.85 out of max 5 stars.

Although the score of all rated editors exceeds 4.85, a dozen editors have been named in the acknowledgments. What further suggests that these editors, who were acknowledged by name, developed effective social communication is that they were called by the first names most of the time. These communicative editors were Dawn Schmidt (16.4%), Jim Bowden (16%), Glenna M. Jenkins (12.6%), Josh Pennington (8.5%), Joanna Mackie (7.3%), Jeannine Mallory (7.1%), Gary Bentley (7%), Karyn L. Stecyk (6.2%), Patrick Findler (6%), Marieke Krijnen (5.2%), Curtis Stumpf (4.8%) and Susan Chambers (3%). Although both female and male editors were equally assigned and rated, a very slight preference was observed in evaluating female editors.

If you look at only the ratings for these top editors, their average is an impressive 4.94 out of 5 stars.

This author-to-editor appreciation is phenomenal, given that all global publishers used to keep the identity of the language editor anonymous. When you work with one of our editors, there is compelling evidence that you will get a swift, yet effective, editing service with useful linguistic tips and stylistic recommendations.
