Why is book publishing so challenging?
The book review process can be demanding and the author’s manuscript may require revisions which you, as a publisher, find difficult to handle.
So why don’t you hire an Expert?
The editorial process of book publishing usually includes some level of copy editing. The question: is it sufficient? Well, often it can feel like a coin toss, as manuscripts vary in language quality. Let’s take a look at a specific case, where we were approached by the editorial staff from a major publisher:
Hi Peerwith, could you provide a quote for copy editing of this manuscript? See attached.
This is a one of our most common requests at Peerwith. However, what’s interesting is that this publisher uses their own service providers for level 1-3 copy editing? So why turn to Peerwith for a quote? As it turns out, both the book editor and author decided that the level of English was insufficient and needed work that would not be fixed by the standard copy editing provided through their editorial service. This job required an Expert. They needed language editing instead of copy editing, provided as an author service. And the author wanted to stay involved, collaborate with the Expert to improve the quality of the output.
Thus we posted the language editing job on the Peerwith marketplace. Multiple quotes were provided by different Experts in a range 2700 – 4000 USD. And the author selected the best Expert for the job.
Meet some of our book publishing experts
Josh has worked as a book editor on numerous projects for major academic publishers. He has language edited more than 50 books, all which number more than 500 pages (the largest one around 900 pages). He also has extensive translation experience, having translated several books into English from Russian, French, Spanish, and Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian.
Jeannine has 20+ years’ experience in editing books, theses, academic reports, and journal articles. “It is my honor to help researchers and authors achieve success.”
So what about the total cost of publishing?
Language editing (author service) is more complete and is therefore more expensive than copy editing (editorial service). So the total cost of publishing would increase correspondingly. In the case mentioned above, the publisher and author decided to “split the costs”. The author selected Josh for the job, so he paid the extra fee for Josh’s expertise on top of the base fee paid-for by the publisher.
Copy editing often involves only light proofreading and formatting. The beauty of Peerwith’s book publishing service is that we combine copy editing with language editing, meaning that 1 + 1 = 3, i.e. you get Author Services and Editing Services, with Copy editing Services thrown in as a bonus. Separate service modules mutually reinforce each other, e.g. curated experts that prepare a manuscript, do post-acceptance tasks, achieving efficiency and cost savings.
