Good afternoon Joris. Thank you for taking the time to tell us more about yourself and your work for Peerwith. Let’s start with getting to know you first – can you tell me a bit about your background and why you started Peerwith?
Good day, yes, of course. I’ve been working in academic publishing for 20 years. I have worked at large companies such as Elsevier and Wolters Kluwer, but also in start-ups, such as Peerwith. I co-founded Peerwith because I felt that the author services market, more and more important in an increasingly international environment, can be made more transparent and efficient.
What is your current role?
At the moment, I am focussing on bringing the platform closer to librarians. Librarians are in the process of broadening their roles from providing access to content, to providing optimal access to services that help researchers to be more successful. And this aligns optimally with Peerwith’s mission!
Peerwith offered via libraries, now what does that look like?
First, we make sure that users can indicate that they are part of a specific institution when they sign up. When we partner with the institute the researchers are affiliated with, we have institutional payment solutions in place, such as bulk payments, so that researchers don’t have to deal with making payments. We also developed a dashboard for librarians. Through this dashboard, librarians will have a good overview of what kind of services are needed, and how libraries can support an institute to have an even greater impact. Also, local services that are already offered via the library will be integrated in the platform so that researchers will have a one-stop shop for all their needs.
In wat phase are you now?
We are excited that we have launched a pilot with the library of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Founded in 1913, the Erasmus University is currently one the biggest universities of the Netherlands with a student population of 23,000 and a research community of around 1,400. In this pilot, we are investigating how libraries can optimally facilitate access to the best and most affordable services.
